Rimegepant, sold under the brand name Nurtec ODT, is used by adult patients to treat acute migraines and as a prophylactic/preventive medication for episodic migraines.

Nurtec ODT (rimegepant) is often well-tolerated. However, nausea and upset stomach are some of the more common side effects experienced in patients. In the clinical trials discussed in the product’s package insert, 2.7% of patients reported nausea while using rimegepant. This was the most common side effect.
Common side effects include:
Nausea (2.7%)
Abdominal pain or upset stomach (2.4%)
Less common side effects include:
Shortness of breath
Skin rash
If you experience shortness of breath or develop a skin rash after taking Nurtec ODT, it’s important to seek prompt medical attention.
If any side effects persist or worsen over time, speak with your healthcare provider to help determine your best options for treatment moving forward.
Nurtec ODT is often dispensed in a blister pack containing eight orally disintegrating tablets. Each tablet contains 75 mg of rimegepant.
One tablet may be taken as needed to manage acute migraine symptoms. It’s not recommended to repeat a dose within 24 hours. Clinical studies have not established the safety of using more than 18 tablets in a 30-day period.
Nurtec ODT is often dosed every other day for prophylaxis or the prevention of migraines.
Using dry hands, gently peel the foil cover off the blister—do not attempt to push the tablet through the foil. Place the tablet on or under the tongue and allow it to dissolve. No additional liquid is needed. Once dissolved, the contents of the tablet can be swallowed along with saliva. Store the remaining tablets securely in their blisters until they are used.
Recent clinical studies have shown that in migraine treatment among patients who have previously failed treatment with similar medications, about 20% of people who took Nurtec ODT (rimegepant) became pain-free within 2-hours of their initial dose. In addition, up to about 40% of people were free of other bothersome migraine symptoms, such as light and sound sensitivity and nausea, 2 hours after they took Nurtec ODT (rimegepant).
In another 3-month limited clinical study looking at migraine prevention, people who took Nurtec ODT (rimegepant) every other day had fewer days impacted by migraines per month than those who used a placebo.
While some activity may begin within about 30 minutes, Nurtec ODT (rimegepant) usually takes around two hours to reach maximum effect. For migraine prevention, it may take around 1 to 2 months of treatment to determine whether migraines are beginning to occur less frequently.
