CREON (pancrelipase) is composed of a mixture of digestive enzymes (lipase, protease, and amylase). It has been proven to help individuals who do not produce enough digestive enzymes naturally (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) digest foods.
CREON contains three key enzymes that help it to digest foods: lipase, protease, and amylase. Each assists in breaking down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates that are commonly seen as the macronutrients within most food groups.

Always swallow CREON capsules whole. Do not crush or chew CREON capsules. Take them with enough liquid to swallow them along with your food. Crushing, chewing, or allowing the CREON capsules to dissolve in your mouth may cause irritation and make the medication less effective.
If you have trouble swallowing capsules, open the capsules and sprinkle the contents on a small amount of room-temperature, soft acidic food, like applesauce, bananas, or plain Greek yogurt. If you decide to put CREON on your food, swallow it right after you mix it. Avoid storing any foods with CREON placed on top of them as part of your medical routine.
Drink enough liquid to make sure the medicine is swallowed completely.
CREON (pancrelipase) has been associated with a serious bowel disorder called fibrosing colonopathy. This condition is more likely to occur in children managing cystic fibrosis and individuals taking high doses of CREON for extended periods of time. It’s critical to work with your healthcare provider and ensure you are using the recommended dosage.
CREON may increase the uric acid levels in the blood (hyperuricemia). Elevated uric acid levels may be more likely to occur in patients using high doses of CREON or who have an established history of elevated uric acid levels, gout, or reduced kidney function.
This medicine is made from the pancreas of pigs. Some pigs' organs have transmitted certain viruses to people who have received them, although the risk is low. The product is tested for viruses to keep the transmission risk low.
Lastly, CREON (pancrelipase) has been known to cause serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and asthma, which can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention. If you’re experiencing difficulty breathing, seek medical attention right away.
CREON (Lipase protease amylase) is known to have some of these common side effects:
More common
Vomiting
Dizziness
Cough
Irritability
Altered blood sugar levels (high or low)
Abdominal pain
Abnormal or frequent bowel movements
Gas
Cold or flu-like symptoms (nasopharyngitis)
Less common
While less likely to occur, some other concerns have been noted by individuals using CREON. If you experience any of the following, it’s important to discuss this with your healthcare provider:
Bloating or swelling of the face, arms, hands, lower legs, or feet
Pale skin
Rapid weight changes
Stomach bloating
Tingling of the hands or feet
Unusual bleeding or bruising
